Workload models work miracles
Through 2011 NTEU members in a number of Faculties and Schools campaigned successfully to have a collegially-developed workload model (as required under our Enterprise Agreement) implemented in their Schools.
Feedback from members about the positives that have come from their successful campaigns include:
- Workloads are now distributed more fairly
- Staff know well in advance of Semester commencing their teaching load and this allows for proper preparation rather than feeling behind the eight-ball as the Semester starts
- A bully left the university because having a workload model stripped him of the capacity of playing favourites or penalising staff with workload distribution;
- Staff who had been “protected” from taking a teaching load under a workload model that had not been collegially developed are now taking a fairer share of the teaching workload
- All work being performed is being taken into account when teaching load is distributed
- Intercampus travelling time is being taken into account
- Staff feeling like they were being treated like adults
- Increased productivity, because staff weren’t feeling distressed and spending time venting
Members working in areas that do not have a collegially-developed Workload model are welcome to contact for advice on how to get a collegially-developed workload model up and running in your workplace.

[ 0 ] I have just seen the new performance standards in terms of publications for academic staff in Buseco - they are unsustainable. But also staff have not had any representation in terms of their promulgation. Unfortunately these standards impact in an insidious way on workloads. Acadmic staff need their union to be much more proactive in discussions about performance standards - our working conditions are being seriously undermined.
