Room at the Top: Women’s Progress or Glass Ceiling?

This paper examines the number and proportion of women occupying senior administrative positions in Australian universities, and examines the changes that have occurred over the past fifteen years. Higher education administration has had a female majority for many years, and the female proportion of these positions increased from nearly 57 per cent to over 63 per cent between 1994 and 2009. Women now occupy 45.0 per cent of senior posts, compared with 25.2 per cent in 1994. Some universities have more senior women than others, with some having relatively few women at the top.
