Media Release: UWA Staff Say No To Job Cuts in Engineering

Posted 14 October 2010 by Chris Latham (WA Division)

Staff from the University of Western Australia, held an early morning protest on Stirling Highway highlighting concerns at the University’s decision to slash jobs in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. The protest, which received considerable support from passing motorists.

Staff Cuts Protest

Dr Jamie O’Shea,a lecturer in zoology and medicine at UWA and National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Branch President, said, “Staff are concerned that between 20 and 25% of teaching and research staff (approximately 30 full time staff) in Engineering, Computing and Mathematics will lose their jobs to help the University pay for its decision over the past five years to divert Commonwealth Funding, which is generated by the University’s teaching activities, towards other activities including capital works”.

“These job cuts come at time when the demand in this state for engineering graduates is increasing. At a time when the University is increasing the number students enrolled in Engineering it is astonishing that the University is moving to sack academic staff”, Dr O’Shea continued

“These job cuts can only result in sharp rises in workloads for staff in Engineering. This can only put considerable pressure on the capacity of UWA staff to maintain the high standard of education that UWA is renowned”.

The  protest also marked the start of a continuing campaign to stop job cuts at UWA.

The message from the group was clear.

“We call on UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson, and the UWA Executive to heed the concerns of staff by prioritising the funding of teaching activities at UWA, to stopping the planned job cuts and protecting the quality of education in Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.
