Casual Voices: Richard

Posted 1 March 2012 by Paul Clifton (Uni Casual)

I've been teaching as a casual for 34 years, at a dozen or so universities, across topics and departments as diverse as: Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, Management, Marketing, Music, and Media Studies.  Have dozens of publications, a dozen patents, and several books to my name.

I am the 'Universal Casual'.  So far no luck in securing a permanent position.

They say the universities don't have enough funding.  I say, why not merge all the universities into one and get rid of all those useless and overpaid Vice Chancellors and their cronies.  That would free up funds and the merged university could hire us casuals (now distributed across several universities) full time - or at least permanent part-time.  If we had permanent positions we might risk bringing our (now private) research and grant funds into the university.  That would  provide generous funding.

There is no shortage of funds available to higher education, there is a surplus of expensive administration and high level 'dead wood' that have 'retired on the job'.
