NTEU media release: TAFE4ALL campaign moves into high gear as cuts decimate Victoria’s TAFE sector
The campaign to reverse the Victorian government’s plan to slash nearly $300 million off grants to Victoria’s 18 TAFE institutes is moving into high gear, with the full extent of the devastation from the cuts becoming clearer each day.
“The devastation being caused by these cuts is becoming clearer with the passing of each day,” said National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Victorian Secretary, Dr Colin Long.
“Hardly a day has gone by over the last week without at least one TAFE announcing job losses, course closures and cut backs to services.”
“While no TAFE campuses are spared, the impact is particularly hard felt in regional Victoria, where TAFE is a vital part of the social, cultural and economic fabric of the community.”
“How Victoria’s Training Minister Peter Hall, a National Party representative, can preside over the wholesale destruction of such a crucial component of regional Victoria’s economic and social infrastructure, defies belief.”
Although TAFE institutes are still calculating the full impact of the cuts, a full list of impacts NTEU has been able to compile is attached to this e-mail.
“Over the next two weeks, NTEU will be joining with the Australian Education Union and other organisations opposing the cuts, to organise rallies in every regional centre affected by the TAFE cuts.”
Dr Long will be attending many of these rallies and be available for comment to the local media.
The details of these rallies are as follows:
Wednesday 23 May 12.30pm – SuniTAFE Mildura
Thursday 24 May 12.30pm – SMB Ballarat
