UNITY IN DIVERSITY: Health Sciences staff find common ground

Posted 6 July 2011 by Adam Knobel (NSW Division)

A proposed restructure within the Faculty of Health Sciences has galvanised clinical education staff. Facing a new structure that appears to have written them all out of a job in 2012, the group has joined together as NTEU members to tell management they’ve got it all wrong. Here is there message about the importance of working in union to achieve collective goals:

You will not find a more diverse group of people working together than in the Clinical and Professional Fieldwork portfolio at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sydney.  Speech pathologists, physiotherapists, orthoptists, rehabilitation counsellors, administrators, diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists, occupational therapists, and exercise physiologists. We are employed part-time, full-time, permanent, on nomination casual, contracted...

What do we have in common? As well as having a strong work ethic to provide quality clinical education placements and support to students and educators, we are collectively facing a faculty management that is introducing a new clinical education structure, which appears to have written every current employee in the FHS clinical and professional fieldwork portfolio out of a job in 2012.

Given the diverse and casual, short-term contracted and part-time nature of employment in our portfolio it would be easy for many of the staff to feel isolated and alone in dealing with the enormous restructure that FHS management have proposed. However, clinical education staff have realised that Unity is the common solution providing us with the support and core of stability we need during this tumultuous period.  It has opened the channels for communication with each other and the NTEU. 95% of clinical education staff at FHS have joined the NTEU over the past 2 months.

We have joined together and with the NTEU to protect our common welfare. Because we are unified we have created the necessary climate to support the well being of staff as a whole and the safety of our jobs.  Unity within the group supports all staff having the right to initiate and contribute to discussions on matters concerning our common welfare.

We have joined to deliver a satisfactory outcome, which not only benefits the university, students and external stakeholders, but also protects staff interest and livelihoods.

Wish us good luck!
