Active UWS Campaigns
NTEU Campaigns 2010-2012
NTEU UWS branch aims to utilise the opportunities in the new staff agreements and the commitments UWS has made in the interim-compact agreements to actively monitor, enforce and improve the working environment for staff at UWS.
Implementation of the Staff Agreements
It is essential that all members are active in ensuring that the conditions of the staff agreements are enforced and upheld. The NTEU has representatives positions on the Implementation committee that will oversee that the agreements are upheld and make final determinations based on recommendations received from the following subcommittees that members can nominate to participate on including;
- Review of Clinical Nursing Educator Facilitation Rate of pay.
- Position Description and Reclassification Committee
- Misconduct, Unsatisfactory performance Review Committees
- Workload Committees. Sub Committee of local branch committee and operates in each school.
- Indigenous Employment Strategy
- Career development & planning
- Casuals Working Party. Monitor proportion of casual employees, review recruitment criteria, promote career paths, improve work environment for casuals.
- Intellectual property Policy
- UWS Committees and Governance.
Networks that link UWS Branch to broader NTEU Networks
- UWS Sustainability Network will be linked to NSW NTEU Environmental Sustainability Network. This forum links NTEU strategies and initiatives with local UWS initiatives to improve environmental sustainability.
- NTEU Women’s Network will meet in June 2010 to discuss and explore active campaigns and/or initiatives that can be developed at your institution that are specifically related to matters that women wish to support or become involved in.
COMPACTS Campaign: Sate of Our Sector
The introduction of University compacts interim agreements have been negotiated between UWS and the federal Government. UWS has identified several key targets that will change the core function of the university focus and how it operates as a Tertiary Education institution. Our campaign will require total membership engagement and support to ensure that NTEU can inform and work with UWS to ensure that adequate staff resource planning is undertaken to prevent any disadvantageous outcomes for staff ie. Restructures, closure of courses, increased staff workload etc.
NTEU has been working with our members to address workload concerns. Your NTEU bargaining team has negotiated a new workload determination process that has large emphasis on school workload committees. Your local branch will also establish a new Workload Committee to advise and support members in the implementation and application of the new workload model. This committee will monitor the implementation to ensure the workload clause is correctly implemented and enforced. To express interest to be on your school workload committee, please contact your local organiser Kaylene Field at uws@nsw.nteu.org.au.

The utilisation of casual employment at UWS is a major concern and has implications on broader employment issues such as workload, opportunities for workforce development and also the future of UWS as a quality provider of tertiary education. The NTEU has been successful at establishing a casual network at UWS. The Network is focussed on integrating casuals into a collegial work environment, keeping them informed and up to date and campaigning on major issues that affect casual staff including backpay for underpayment and conversion to secure employment. Your NTEU bargaining team has secured a number of important advances for casuals in the new academic staff agreement including a commitment to reduce the overall proportion of casual staff, improved access to for long term casual staff to apply to have their position converted to ongoing employment, promotion of career paths for casuals and adequate payment for additional duties such as attending department meetings, training or marking.
