Breakthrough on consultation in Science Faculty

Posted 13 July 2011 by John Pezy (Flinders University)

NTEU and Monash University have agreed to go to the independent umpire about Science Faculty consultation. Last week the NTEU notified University management of yet another dispute over management’s failure to properly consult Science Faculty staff about the proposed job cuts, and sent a lawyers’ letter demanding that they properly consult all staff. This led to intensive discussions early this week, and eventually to an agreement to refer all the concerns raised by the NTEU during this change process to Fair Work Australia. The Union and the University will ask the tribunal to convene a conciliation conference to try to find an agreed way forward. The issues which the Tribunal will consider include whether the consultation to date has been adequate, and which categories of staff in the Faculty are “affected staff” for the purposes of consultation under the Agreement. We will keep you informed of any developments. In the meantime, keep the campaign rolling!
