First Bendigo TAFE, now Kangan TAFE PACCT staff go on strike

Posted 4 May 2011 by Alex White (Vic Division)

On Monday, Kangan NTEU members held a 24 hour strike, following from members at Bendigo TAFE at the start of April. This is the first wave of industrial action by TAFE PACCT staff for more than ten years!

What is causing this industrial unrest? PACCT staff are demanding wage justice. The pay rises that non-teaching TAFE staff have received over a long period have left PACCT staff salaries trailing behind those of similar staff who work in Higher Education or Dual Sector institutes.

The current pay rises on offer so far at TAFE institutes who have commenced bargaining are very low and NTEU members have decided it is time to send a message to the Victorian Government and their employers that they have had enough of being treated as second class workers PACCT staff are calling on their Institute management to lobby the Victorian Government on behalf of their PACCT Staff for a more equitable Salary Structure.

The Kangan strike was supported by local Members of Parliament Bronwyn Halfpenny and Frank McGuire.
