or the story on Radio National's Books & Arts Daily: "The humanities department at Melbourne's La Trobe University is facing a restructure that will see a reduction of almost 40 staff. Religion studies will be no more and art history won't be offered as a major but as an electives in the history department. The Dean of humanities and social sciences at La Trobe Uni, Tim Murray, is leading the changes and says they're about bringing the humanities into alignment with the needs of the 21st century. Which raises the question, why do the humanities need to be updated -- this foundation of the university system? Is it because of the increase in international students who are more likely to study accounting, law or medicine? Or is it because of the rise of commercial imperatives within universities?
