Uniforms on Open Day

Posted 11 July 2012 by Serena O'Meley (La Trobe University)

The Branch has been contacted by a number of members who strongly object to the request to wear corporate uniforms and colours on Open Day.

No doubt the purpose of wearing the La Trobe colours is to make staff more easily identifiable to students and to market the 'brand'.  However, unless the university provides you with a uniform and pays for your attendance on the day you cannot be required to wear these clothes.

It seems the deeper issue which members are expressing is their understandable discontent with the increasingly corporate thrust of the ‘business’.  For some the concept of a uniform makes them feel like nothing more than corporate sales people and strikes at their identify as independent, academic advisors.

If you choose not to wear a uniform or La Trobe colours we recommend that you at least wear the lanyard so it is obvious that you are staff of the university.
