NTEU delegates set the agenda for bargaining

NTEU representatives from   universities across Australia met for two days last week to decide the   national priorities for the next round of bargaining negotiations for the   sector. A key component of the Union’s agenda will be measures to reduce the   high level of casualisation in the sector. Other major claims agreed at the   conference include:

  •   Enforceable regulation of academic and professional staff workloads.
  •    Improving career progression   and classification procedures for professional staff.
  •   Further increases in Indigenous employment based on binding Indigenous   employment strategies and targets.
  •   A 7%   per annum flat annual salary increase over four years. This is to compensate   for cost of living increases, productivity gains and to maintain domestic and   international competitiveness.
  •   Provision for employees who are dealing with the consequences of   domestic violence.

Your union will be telling   university employers that they must ensure  their most valuable resource, their staff,   get the respect, recognition and reward they deserve.

Bargaining should be driven by   the concerns of members. The national priorities for this round have been   informed by consultation with members, surveys and feedback.  But bargaining negotiations are not only   about the big issues that affect the whole sector. It is also an opportunity   to address and resolve local or university specific concerns. Negotiations   for a new Agreement at USQ are not due to start before March 2013, the   current Agreement doesn’t expire until June next year. Your Branch Committee   will be running local area meetings and other activities through second   semester to get your input. Your involvement as an NTEU member at USQ in   setting the agenda for the negotiations at USQ is important.
