UQ Celebrates Centenary of IWD
UQ celebrates 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day
Staff at the University of Queensland celebrated the centenary of International Women’s Day on 8 March, at a breakfast function at the UQ Club, co-hosted by the NTEU and the Human Resources Division of UQ. The event was chaired by Ann Stewart, Director of UQ’s Equity Office, and NTEU member.
Guest speakers included the National President of the NTEU, Jeannie Rea, who spoke about the significant achievements made for women in Higher Education, particularly around paid parental leave, equal pay, and career progression. However she noted that high levels of gender segregation still remain. In a comment from the floor, the Chair of the UQ Academic Board, Susan Hamilton elaborated on this point with regards to enrolments Science and Engineering, with very few women enrolling in the latter.
Shard Lorenzo, the Director of Human Resources spoke about the challenges facing academic women in promotion and leadership at the University of Queensland, and highlighted issues associated with the lack of adequate child care facilities, which have been exacerbated by the destructive the January floods.
Professor in Literature and Women’s Studies, Carole Ferrier spoke about ‘Fxxxxism’ in the University context, the relegation of Women’s Studies at UQ to the margins, exemplified by the ERA process which, in the Humanities, subsumed Women’s and Gender Studies into other categories like ‘literature’. Carole also talked about the contradictory character of ‘Fxxxxism’; being attacked as both offensively radical and passé.
To finish the event the audience were treated to sensitive renditions of original songs by singer/songwriter Charity Carleton, performing under the moniker ‘Ichabod’s Crane’.
