As a part of a revitalised Blue Stocking Week, the SA Division of the NTEU presents:

SAFE SPACES: A FORUM ON DOMESTIC ABUSE AND THE WORKPLACE

Date:   Thursday 16 August 2012

Venue: Eclipse Room, Level 4 Union House, The University of Adelaide

Time:   Forum to commence at 6:00pm, but please join us from 5:30pm for networking and nibbles next door in the University of Adelaide Staff Club

Bluestocking Week is a week of celebration to draw attention to what women have won and are still fighting for in higher education. It’s not just about access and numbers of women at universities, but also about what is being taught and researched, and by whom.

Speakers :

Dale Bagshaw

After a long, varied and impressive career, Dale Bagshaw is now an adjunct Associate Professor at UniSA and a Visiting Professor at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. She has been Head of School and Director of Postgraduate Studies at UniSA’s School of Psychology, Social Work & Social Policy and, since retiring, she has continued to conduct research, supervise PhD students and conduct conflict resolution and mediation training for organisations such as the National Family Mediation Service in Ireland, the SA Department of Health, the Australian Education Union and the Department for Education and Children's Services.

In the late 1990s Dale was appointed Chair of the Family Services Council and a member of the Family Law Council by the Commonwealth Attorney-General and as a member of the National Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse by the Commonwealth Minister for Family Services. Added to this Dale has been the  President and Vice-President of the  World Mediation Forum, is the inaugural and longstanding President of the Asia Pacific Mediation Forum, and a longstanding member of the International Editorial Board of the international US-based journal, the Conflict Resolution Quarterly. She has led many research projects which have focused on family violence and published the findings in many books and journals

We are pleased to have Dale Bagshaw speak at the forum, where she will speak on: The invisible, gender-based nature of domestic  violence and its effects on women in the workplace

Sandra Dann

Sandra is currently the Director of the Working Women's Centre, a position she has held since 1998. She is co-Chair of the South Australian Women's Services Network and represents the Centre on a number of committees.  Sandra is President of HETA Incorporated, President of the Industrial Relations Society of South Australia and Chair of the Voice of Women (Australia) Organisation. Sandra regularly conducts information sessions and training and has presented widely to conferences and seminars. In 2005 Sandra completed the Governor's Leadership Foundation Program and is now a fellow of the Leadership Institute of South Australia. She has most recently been working with women in Timor-Leste to establish a Working Women's Centre there in September 2011.

Sandra will be discussing the “Safe at Home, Safe at Work Domestic Violence Workplace Rights and Entitlements Project.”

 Maria Hagias

Maria is Executive Director of Central Domestic Violence Service that provides support and accommodation to women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.  Maria has been Co-Chair of the coalition of Women’s Domestic Violence Services SA for 12 months.  Has worked in the DV sector for 20 years and represented the sector on a number of State and national committees including WESNET (National Peak Body), currently is a member of the Premiers Council for Women in SA Established in 2002, the Premier’s Council for Women provides leadership and advice to ensure the interests of women are at the forefront of Government policies and strategies. Maria has over the years advocated for inclusive, client driven and responsive models that address violence against women.  Marias’ qualifications are in Social Work and Community Services Management.

Maria will be presenting on the "I Step Forward  Program" in London Ontario, Canada which is a workplace initiative that aims to end violence and abuse in the community, workplace and at home and create Champions of Peace.
