Melbourne Members' Meeting - Stop the job losses

Posted 3 August 2009 by Atosha McCaw (Vic Division)

NTEU general meeting is to be held

Date: August 4th

Time: 1-2pm

Location: Public Lecture Theatre in Old Arts.

The VC has announced that University management intends to:

- Reduce total staff positions by 220 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions

- No renewal for fixed-term contracts for professional
staff unless absolutely necessary

- A limited voluntary redundancy program for permanent academic and
professional staff ONLY where positions are no longer required.

- $30 million cut in expenditure

These proposed job cuts sit on top of the restructuring that is occurring in every faculty, school, department and unit at the University.

University Management has demanded a 7% cut this financial year, centralise IT, decentralise HR and Finance, shut down student centres and tighten workload models on academics.

The NTEU is fighting all these regressive changes at the University of Melbourne and is deeply concerned with the new style of corporate governance.

The destruction of collegiate-based decision making is creating a workforce that is stressed and living in the dark when it comes to decision making.

220 job losses at the University will mean courses will be forced out, overcrowding of lecture theatres will worsen and the standard of teaching will slide. There will be hardly any administrative support for students or academics with centralised waiting times for IT help.

We do not agree with these cuts.

Come along to the meeting and be part of the campaign to STOP these job losses!
