Timetable Policy in Conflict With Family Friendly Workplace

Posted 25 May 2012 by Kevin Poynter (Charles Sturt University)

Following a meeting between CSU Management and the NTEU on Monday 21st May where we outlined the problems with the new timetable policy and its implementation management issued the urgent “What’s New” notice (below) to address the issues we raised.

Management has agreed to extensive consultation with a view to implementing a mutually agreeable policy, that is consistent with the CSU policy on maintaining a family friendly workplace, in time for session 3. The NTEU is seeking further information on the timeline and methodology for the consultation and will be watching carefully to ensure that the commitments made to staff are met.

If you have any problems with the Implementation of the new Timetable Policy, let us know at csu@nteu.org.au

CSU "Whats New" Announcement:

 Subject:

Update On The Draft Timetable Policy

 Message:

Important Points:

1. There will be no change to the ordinary hours of duty and span of ordinary hours as a result of the new Timetable System to be implemented across CSU in Session 2, 2012.

Section 6.1 of the draft Timetable policy has been revised to:

“Standard University Teaching Times (“standard hours”) are from 8am-6pm, inclusive, and core teaching hours (“core hours”) are from 9am-5pm, inclusive, during University Teaching Periods.

The Timetable Unit will endeavour to concentrate scheduling to “standard hours” and will consult with Schools where this is not possible.

In the first instance, the Timetable Unit will make every effort to schedule classes (including first year) during core hours.

Timetabled activities may occasionally occur outside standard hours to accommodate all types of learning and teaching activities, including but not restricted to internal classes, residential classes and exams.

Additionally, as specified in the Enterprise Agreement (EA), no employee will be required to commence teaching within twelve (12) hours of the conclusion of teaching on the previous day.”

2. The submission of a staff availability variation request has been extended to 5pm Thursday, 24th May, 2012.

Note: Circumstances for consideration of restricted availability will include ‘other special circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis’.

3. Acceptable and Unacceptable reasons for a variation to allocated schedules will be reviewed to:
a. ensure alignment with legislation and the existing CSU family friendly policies, and
b. consider feedback from staff.

4. Phase 2 of the Enterprise Timetable project will become an extension of the Phase 1 pilot. The Timetable policy will remain in draft form until issues are resolved. There will be ongoing extensive consultation with staff and students on the policy during Session 2, 2012.

5. The final revised copy of the Timetable policy will be available for Session 3, 2012.

6. The latest version of the draft Timetable policy is located at http://www.csu.edu.au/division/student-admin/staff/timetabling/resources

Please provide feedback on the draft Timetable policy to your relevant Faculty Dean or Helen Francis, Director University Projects (hfrancis@csu.edu.au)

Note: Updates to the policy will be communicated regularly via What’s New and News.
