La Trobe University staff to take industrial action in June - message to students

Posted 31 May 2013 by Virginia Mansel Lees (La Trobe University)

Dear students,

La Trobe University staff have been in negotiations for a new Collective Agreement for around 7 months but there has been no progress on key items.

At the top of our list of demands is that senior management withdraws a baffling and unfair academic workloads framework.  The framework is being used as a deliberate device to intensify teaching and administrative workloads.  The result is that many staff have less time to undertake research in their areas of study which in turn undermines the quality of your education.

There are also several job security provisions which senior management wants to undermine. They don’t want to consult properly about major change and there is also an attempt to reduce redundancy entitlements.  These are extraordinarily important conditions when you consider that over $30million dollars will be lost from La Trobe’s budget between now and 2017 due to the Federal Government’s $2.3billion budget cuts in higher education.

Members of the National Tertiary Education Union will be holding one hour Stop Work meetings over the next two weeks and as a result many classes will be interrupted or cancelled (see times below).   Our members will also put a ban on working overtime and will (randomly) ban answering of phones.

Further industrial actions will be discussed at the Stop Work meetings unless unfair attacks on our working conditions are withdrawn.

Please support university staff by explaining to your fellow students why this industrial action is taking place.  You can also show your support by posting the Einstein cover picture (below) on Facebook.

In unity,
